Captain Labor
So I see this on the wall…
I keep looking at the top, second to the left position:

All I kept thinking was “there must be a little captain in her”.

A Gift for Jamie Lynn
I was walking on 42nd St and out of the corner of my eye I saw him holding this sign, and laughed as I continued. I stopped, took my headphones out, took a few dollars out, gave them to him and then asked if he’d mind if I took a picture. He had no problem with that, quickly posed for a couple, which then got him a little more attention, so hopefully he had a good few minutes after that.
I’m sure Jamie Lynn Spears will love whatever he picks out.

Double Hard Drive Failure
A couple of weeks ago the web server this site is on, along with a couple of other sites I have, like MMA on Tap, experienced a double hard drive failure. Not fun at all.
I didn’t have a recent external backup of the sites on it, as I was backing up locally, and obviously that was shot. The last backup I had was on the old server, which just so happened to be cracked the week before, so I wiped it out. Putting off making that new backup for a week was all the time that was needed before I was reminded why you never put something like that off. The hard drives failed and the server was down.
We tried to recover all files, but after days of swaps and attempts, everything just had to be recreated.
Luckily, data was not effected, so after setting up the site basics, the only thing that was needed was to fill in a few images here and there, and then continue on.
There are still some broken images on some of the sites. Some I’ll come across and upload, others are shot for good. Most have redesigns coming, so I’m focusing more on that anyway.
So, the lesson of the day, which has been the lesson of the day for many people, for many days: always make sure you have a recent backup of your work.

More HD!
Looks like Time Warner in Queens is about to add to the HD lineup. One cable box is showing new HD channels, while another isn’t. I can’t watch any of them yet, but hey, they look like they’ll be fun. CNN HD, MHD, History HD, A&E HD, Food Network HD, Lifetime Movies HD, HGTV HD, and finally two of my potential favorites: Versus/Golf HD and NHL Network HD. Very cool, hopefully they’ll pop on within a day or two.

Rubber Band Gun
Easily the coolest rubber band gun I’ve ever seen.

Long Island Confusion
We’ve been in Manhattan for almost five years now, and it’s time to go get some space.
While north and west (yup, Jersey) would make sense for commuting, family and friends are all east. So, east Queens and west Nassau have become the targets.
Long Island is part of the NY metro area. Geographically, it’s NYC boroughs Brooklyn and Queens, along with Nassau and Suffolk counties. However, when someone says Long Island, they’re usually just talking about Nassau and Suffolk. Little tidbit: if you’re there, you’re “on” LI, not “in” it.
Like many, we’ve been scouring craigslist for real estate listings.
By default, I go to newyork.craigslist.org. It’s just been what I’ve had bookmarked for years, and under real estate there are borough tabs, NJ, LI, Westchester (NY) and Fairfield (CT) counties.
What I just found out is there’s an LI-only site, longisland.craigslist.org, and it’s pretty active, and has completely different listings.
It can be hard enough combing one craigslist, but two craigslist sites doesn’t make it any easier.
There doesn’t seem to be any other site for Westchester in NY, NJ has a NYC suburbs section, which is just a subsection of the NY craigslist. The same subsection method goes for CT‘s Fairfield county.
If you search for the same things over and over, I strongly recommend using craigslist’s RSS feeds. They’re available for almost every part of the website. Let’s say you’re trying to find something near the LIRR (like I am), the RSS feeds for each would be: NY and LI. Not horrible to follow in a feedreader, but any time you want to search for anything, you’ve got two sites to hit, and two to keep modifying.
All that just to say: it’d sure be nice if the LI and NYC LI subsection were connected.

Semi-Private Eyes
Report: Clemens’ attorney hires private eyes to study McNamee
Roger Clemens’ lawyer has hired private investigators in an attempt to challenge the credibility of Brian McNamee, who has claimed to have injected Clemens with steroids, a lawyer familiar with the matter told The New York Times.
How effective can a private eye be if the whole world knows what they’re doing?

Grand Central Terminal
As far as I can remember, today was the first day I ever stepped into Grand Central Terminal. I was told it was odd since I’m a New Yorker, but I grew up on Long Island and now I live on the west side. That’s all Penn Station, including my Amtrak trips. It’s amazing how nice Grand Central is compared to Penn. Penn supposedly used to have a nice look as well, and some older shots in the Wikipedia article and Google Image Search seem to confirm.
The reason for my monumental first trip wasn’t actually trip-related, it was just to nab some food of all things. The “food court” matches the look, and is also a few notches nicer than the typical food you’d find in a train station.

The Slow Monster
I might as well make another Cloverfield monster post, following up my last one. Someone took the trailer and made it real sloooow.

Cloverfield Monster Screenshot
I was checking out the new Cloverfield trailer (thanks to a pointer from Chris Thilk) and decided to take a screenshot of (the part of the) monster that they show from the 1080p version.
A tentacle, perhaps?
