Google+ Makes Me Want to Blog

Blogging, something I never really did. I moved from one platform to another, learning them for other projects or just to experiment with what was out there.

What was published was on an uncompleted design, on quickly out-of-date HTML. With no real content, there was no reason to update.

With Google+ coming along and possibly being a new challenger for Facebook, I'm tempted to start blogging again.

Why?
Owning "me".

All of the services out there make it easy not to have your own website or blog, but hard to keep all of your own thoughts.

Twitter is great for random thoughts, a few links and quickie public conversations.

Facebook has been fun for re-connecting with old friends, posting pictures and still has one of the easiest & nicest ways to post a link to another site.

Tumblr has shown me how easy blogging can be, even though I only used it as a testing ground.

Flickr still hosts most of my photos.

Delicious has most of my reference links, although most of those are private.

Switching to Google Reader has led to me starting to post links in there, too.

There are still more systems and ecosystems I’ve tested or still use. Many are closed, with no easy way to keep or export your own information.

Whether or not Google+ takes off isn’t the point. It’s leaving yourself behind as each of these sites evolves or dies off. You build your profile and connections up only to lose them, from Myspace to Friendster all the way back to SixDegrees.

Most of these sites have different purposes, different ways to communicate and for me, different audiences, but the separation is easy to overcome with some settings of my own. Instead of thinking of ways to import my own thoughts, content and favorites, I should be using my own site as a launching pad, originating everything from here and blasting out to the appropriate places.

This isn’t an original thought or plan, but the online commotion over whether or not Google has finally done social right hasn’t inspired me to dive into Google+ (which I will), but make sure I don’t setup another internet silo of me.
